Gyan: Biggest Time Killer in the Corporate World is "Let's have a meeting".

You know why Sabeer Bhatia left Microsoft to start Hotmail.com, it was all because of infinite number of meetings (with no actual implementations) microsoft officials use to have day in and day out:-(

Sabeer was smart guy, not willing to waste time in a meetings where most of the time one guy will keep on speaking and rest other will just listen, few will take a nap too....meetings will have most of the time no agenda or sometime small agends.....but the biggest problem is action taken or so called MoM after the meeting will go off the mind of stakeholders......most they are never tracked and if tracked never implemented or if implemented then during next meeting they are never checked so and so......

So, what should one do in corporate to communicate? Yes, let me talk abt that....

  • We need to ensure that what discussed during meeting is relevent and to the point for all the stakeholders, mostly some HEAD of Dept. will come and keep speaking for long without knowing that what he is talking is irrelevent to many people in that group.

  • At the end, he/she will ask people if any question.......mostly no one will respond becuase people hardly listen to him or they were sleeping during the speech:-), interesting thing is HEAD guy also knows that no one is listening to him, so he will say okey, no prob, you guys can get in touch with me anytime personally or just shoot a mail to me if any query!!!!

  • Sometime, meeting happens over the phone, it is very useful I believe because at least one person speaks and other continue to do their work keeping phone on mute, here speaker gets privilage to refer many mails/docs/ppt while speaking. In this case producyivity loss is less, effectivness and benifits are again low.

Ideally speaking when speaker talks he/she should involve stakholders in his discussion, he should talk to people in between, make the environment jolly and ensure that everyone speaks or provides their views.

Anyway meetings are required but one MUST ensure the effectivness of meeting!!!
