In the stock market there is no room for error and carelessness. I have seen many people losing huge amount of money in the market due to carelessness and few people really make huge amount of money by following simple set of rules. One must be ultra careful while trading because in this game either you become millionaire or you become beggar!

Let us start understanding the market from last Friday, 27^th Jan 2012….

On Friday we have seen nifty opening up higher, drifting down to lower levels and doing minor up-thrust only to recover later and close higher almost 50pts high. To sum up, we can say that nifty has done a testing on Friday and the volume seems to be reasonable hence it is a sign of strength.

We have seen continuous sign of strength on the background with nifty moving straight from 4600 to 5200 which is almost 600pts of straight line recovery with not even a 30-50pts of correction in between. So, we do not rule out correction of 100-200pts of from these levels. But in trading there is a rule, “Never “PREDICT” or “ANTICIPATE” the market, try to “REACT” to what the Market is telling by its behavior” and as of now market is telling me that I will move up, so it is advisable to trade with the trend and stay on the long side of the market.

Since the market is going up, we are holding long position and profits are flowing in our account on daily basis, but don’t become lazy and take it as granted that your profit will flow without any effort. We have to understand daily move of nifty and ensure that we are on the right side of the market.

Let us understand the expected nifty move on Monday…

A) Nifty continues to move up and close 30-50pts higher – Sign of Strength.

B) Nifty remains flat and closes +/- 10/20pts only – We need to see if there was sign of testing or up-thrust or mark-up or mark-down.

C) Nifty closes down 30-50pts lower – It may be a Sign of Weakness or just one day testing. Look at the volume, if volume is higher than it is a SOW, and if volume is low it is a SOS. But before confirming the SOW we need to wait and watch for the next day. If next day is down than it is SOW else we need to check.

D) Look for some clear indications - We may see some kind of “testing” on low to average volume which is sign of strength. We may see “Up-thrust” on high volume which is a sign of weakness.

The answer always lies in “WHAT” the tape says, not trying to figure out the “WHY”.

You will find many policy makers saying that, don't worry people, Greek sovereign debt is contained. Always remember that the same guys were saying "sub-prime was contained" and we all saw what happened in US during 2008. If you were a Greek bond holder with a hedged swap, wouldn't you push for default and get 100% instead of a 50% haircut, especially if you know that your swap would be bailed out by the USTreasury through the Exchange Stabilization Fund, as per AIG in 2008? All this is good business practice I guess? Spend beyond your means until your broke, then let others pay the tab so you won't have to suffer much. Sounds like the US and sixty percent of the industrialized nations. Presidents, Governors,and Prime Ministers are actually paid for this kind of management. I wish i could make my creditors let me get by with paying only thirty percent of what I owe them.

CDS defines Credit Default Swaps as an agreement that the seller of the CDS will compensate the buyer in the event of a loan default. The buyer of the CDS makes a series of payments (the CDS “fee” or “spread”) to the seller and, in exchange, receives a payoff if the loan defaults. In the event of default the buyer of the CDS receives compensation (usually the face value of the loan), and the seller of the CDS takes possession of the defaulted loan. However, anyone can purchase a CDS, even buyers who do not hold the loan instrument and who have no direct insurable interest in the loan.

Credit default swaps have existed since the early 1990s, and increased in use after 2003. By the end of 2007, the outstanding CDS amount was $62.2 trillion, falling to $26.3 trillion by mid-year 2010.

In my understanding these are simliar Private Mortgage Insurance, which is popular in American on home mortgages, that the buyer is not putting a significant downpayment on the property. The bank or mortgage hold is protected by PMI, so if the owner defaults, the mortgage holder does not lose, the bank is paid off by the insurance and the insurance company then is the owner of the rights to the property. Although it gets a lot more complicated then this in the world of finance and risk, as you can have insurance on only certain parts of the debt or only on a certain level of default or only on particular types of non payments.

One of the main problems with the Greek settlement is what will trigger this insurance. The question then comes, if a bond holder has CDS coverage, why would they settle for anything less then the full face value and what happens if they do? If the bond holder settles for a negotiated settlement, will the insurance kick in. The who should the Greek government be negotiating with the holder of the bond or the CDS.

The other important question is what is a default and how is a default determined. The EU has done everything they can to distance a negotiation with credits from a default. In technical terms it is a default anytime you do not repay the full value of the debt, but what the definition is in legal terms, insurance terms and banking terms could be entirely different.

The European debt crisis is getting ever more serious, and will soon move away from Greece to one of the biggest – and potentially most explosive – economies in the world: Italy.

US institutions have been snapping up credit default swaps (CDSs), insurance against credit losses. The value of guarantees provided by US lenders on government, bank and corporate debt in troubled eurozone countries rose by $80.7bn to $518bn in the first half of this year, according to the Bank of International Settlements. If Italy goes down in a disorderly default it will shake the roots of the financial and economic world, estimate put the money needed over the next three years to be around €650bn

Today cost of insuring Portuguese government debt against nonpayment soared. Reaching a record on fears the country may be forced to follow Greece in seeking a restructuring of its debt. The spread on five-year Portuguese CDS widened to 1,310 basis points from 1,279 basis points earlier this week. That means it would now cost $1.31 million annually to insure $10 million of Portuguese debt against default for five years. Yesterday, S&P stated that if Greece goes into default it does not need to be a domino effect, this is true, except countries like Spain, Italy and Portugal, are already in line.

We all know that buying options provide 100-200% kind of gains just in few days only if they are bought during high volatile period in the market and market tends to show sharp up/down move when they trade near the trend line. A trend line is also a resistance area. The more established the trend line, the higher the resistance. A trading price level that persists for several weeks will give a higher resistance than a similar looking level that lasts one week. Refer the chart above, the trend lines will mark future areas of resistance, if and when, prices arrive near a line. REPUBLIC DAY SPECIAL OFFERS

We have seen nifty moving from 4600 to 5200 in just 3 weeks, a rally of almost 600 points. This rally was a surprise for many as well as me not because if sudden upside but because there was not even a minor profit booking in between. Absence of profit booking was mainly due to the fact that, we have seen 3 major gap-ups of almost 300pts in total and small-small gap-ups or sharp up-move before market closing consists of approx 200pts, so out of 600pts, there was 500pts rise which has not allowed traders (sitting on the sideline waiting to get in) to ride the upside. Gap-up move near the resistance levels are also done in order to minimize the selling pressure from locked in traders.

Nifty 5200-5400 range: This is the trading zone where we will see following activities…

1. Strong traders who are stuck on the short side of the market will finally close their position. Weak hands on the short side are already out due to sharp recovery.

2. Trapped traders on the long side (those who got trapped during the fall of Nov’11) who are now selling mostly at cost to cost will continue to sell which will be absorbed by the fresh new traders coming in the market.

3. Nifty has broken resistance of 5100 on upside with high volume on the day of RBI policy meet and this up move was supported on the very next day of expiry with high volume.

4. We are most likely to see nifty levels of 5360-5400 during next week. To be very frank, nifty has not given any sign of weakness so far and the sharp recovery has surprised everyone including myself.

5. One must be cautioned trading between 5200 - 5400 levels because smart money is slowly exiting which can be seen by high volume narrow bar. Most likely we will see a trend reversal near nifty 5400 but it will be confirmed only once we reach there.

6. It is advisable to trade with light position on the long side and avoid any short at this point of time. Once the market will indicate weakness, I will let all my readers know about that.

7. Market will frequently rest and go sideways after any high volume up-day (seen on the day of RBI Policy meet) because selling has to be disappear before any up move can take place.

Short term trend (1 week)….

Outlook for nifty is bullish for next few days unless we see a sign of weakness on the daily chart. Although the current rally looks tired now but we can still see nifty moving close to 5360-5400 before any meaningful correction or trend reversal. Today we have seen a small gap-up opening followed by +ve day and closing 40pts high which is clearly saying that upside will continue for some more time.

Medium term trend (3-6 months)…

There is no doubt that the current rally is a bear market rally and it is designed in order to suck/absorb all the investors who were holding cash and waiting from last 1 year for the market bottom to invest, they will get trapped at the higher levels. You can observe that there is good volume see in the cash market during last few days. This liquidity driven rally will try to attract retail investors. Once most of the market participants are sucked into the market we will see bottom formation at lower levels.

Is it the time to dethrone the King?

There is a famous french proverb which says “Thesilence of the people is warning for the king”. The proverb is perfectlysuitable for this situation where once the king of all stocks has beenunderperforming in last two years. The shareholders of this biggest grass rootrefinery company in the world are silently witnessing the results, quarter onquarter and year on year and at every negative step they are bashing the stockprice of the company. The confusion and question are increasing on shareholder’s mind whetherto completely exit from the stock at this level or its just a matter of smallhiccup which would passed in a quarter or two.

The Company recently declared Q3 FY 12 result which wasas medicore as its stock performance in last two years. Also before the results the Company announceda buy back program where company will buy back its shares from open market. Nowthe question arises, was it a planned decision to announce a buy back just toovercome the heat of bad result? Or the company is not having any way to utiliseits cash. We tried to analyse the situation to help the shareholder to decidewhether to exit this falling kingdom or invest in it to build much biggerempire.

The top line of the company has grown by 40% (Y-o-Y) inQ3 of the current fiscal year compared to previous year whereas the bottom linehas hit by 13.6% in the same period. The EPS of the company has decrease byover 15% compared to Q3 FY11 but the major blow company faced was in GrossRefinery Margin (GRM) which stood at US$6.8 for Q3 FY12 v/s US$9 in Q3 FY11.The major reason behind this debacle was increase in raw material cost andlowering in the demand citing global slowdown. Another reason which contributeda lot was difference between Arab high and low crude was nearly eroded and thepremium was pretty less.

If looked closely the raw material cost was increasedby 50.6% in 9M FY12 compared to previous year thus, putting excessive pressureon EBITDA margin. One thing to closely monitor was the other income component which wasincreased by 86% (y-o-y)in Q3 FY12. The contribution of the other income(largely interest on idle cash) to PBT grew to 30 per cent from only 15 percent in September 2011 quarter and 10 per cent in December 2010 quarter. Thismeans Reliance Industries is making more money from money than from the capitaldeployed in businesses. This itself is a warning sign for the shareholder wherethe profit from the company’s core business is gradually declining.

Two of its important businessRefining & petrochemical underperformed heavily due to sluggish demand inthe international market. The GRM (Gross Refinery Margin) which stood at $6.8for the quarter was far below than Singapore benchmark which stood at US$ 7.3to US$ 7.4.

The Company has also announced ashare buyback programme just before declaring Q3 results. The Company will buyback shares up to 12 Cr equity shares with a maximum price of Rs 870. it has also capped the buyback investment up to Rs 10,440 Cr. Theannouncement timing is really questionable as let-down results were followed afterthe announcement was made.

Once the king of stock market andprince of index is going through a turbulent situation quite lately. In lastone year, the market has shown a fall of 12% whereas the RIL has a shown a downturnof 20%. The Shareholders are now getting bit dizzy about the underperformanceof the scrip in the bourse in last two years.

A Contrarian view cannot be ruled out where thestock can be invested after witnessing some fall from here due to bad resultand capped upper side for long term investment. The Company which is debt freeon net terms can be included in a portfolio once the bad results are digestedand some green weeds can be viewed on theresults. Nevertheless, it’s high time the biggest private sector company of thecountry start performing or else it would be matter of time when King is dethronefrom its crown.

Remember that all markets are designed for you to lose money in. This is why the markets oscillate up and down within any trend constantly putting you under some sort of pressure. Markets by their very nature have to work in a sinister way to stay in business, otherwise everybody would be winners. This road will be long, the terrain will be tough, and you will suffer pain. Trading is not glamorous! Learning to read the market as a professional in your own right will place you in the top 5% of people who trade or invest in the stock market.

This is the dream of many. The problem is that it is very easy to be wiped-out in the learning process. Some lucky people have the skills to make money from the stock market and keep it, knowing very little. This is because they are skilled at money management and taking risks. They know how to handle a risk - bookmakers generally make good traders because they are skilled and practiced at risk-taking and know how to handle it.

The stock market by its very nature is designed for you to lose money. The rallies and reactions within any trend ensure this process is at work constantly. It is created automatically. The market behaves this way because it has to! The weak have to perish so that the strong can survive. Professional traders are fully aware of weaknesses in traders under stress and will capitalize on this at every opportunity.

To overcome these problems you need to develop a disciplined trading system for yourself. A system strictly followed avoids emotion because like the trained soldier you have already done all the 'thinking' before the problems arrive. This should then force you to act correctly while under trading stress. Most traders will go into the market with great optimism and fail to have any plan because it does not enter their mind that they may be wrong. If they thought that, they would not be in the market in the first place. What do you intend to do if you are wrong? You are going to create problems for yourself unless you have a clear plan in mind. Best of all write it all down before you trade! It's not wrong to be wrong, but it is wrong not to recognize it immediately and to then cover your position.

Never trade unless you have plan ready and waiting to be activated without hesitation. This is a vital part of a good trading system. All this preparation is difficult because you are fighting the urge to trade, before you miss out on everything. If you plan for a failure before each trade, you will be surprised how successful you can become. As you have been reading this page you have probably been nodding your head with agreement and perhaps thinking about your own refinements, but you will still go out and trade on impulse! It is like reading a health magazine, yes you agree with everything they are writing about and at that moment you are determined to get your eating act together, but at the end of the day you have simply carried on as usual.

Market timing is the most important expertise you must master to become a successful trader. This is where the majority of traders fall by the wayside. Buy too early and you are squeezed out on any temporary falls. Sell short too early and you are squeezed out on any up moves, even if, after a few days or so, you are proved correct in your analysis. Understanding what the volume is telling you; recognizing testing, stopping volume, up-thrusts, or no demand, will get your timing surprisingly accurate.

When you do decide to short the market do so only on an up-day/bar if possible [see no demand, up-thrusts, ultra-high volume up bar with next bar level or down], and only if there are signs of weakness in background such as lower tops, down trend, high volume on up day/bar with no corresponding up move following, all signs of weakness. To be a good trader is not easy!

Once you master these two principle you are on the way to create huge wealth

Principle One

The herd will panic after substantial falls and start to sell usually on bad news. Then ask yourself. Is the Smart money prepared to absorb the panic selling at these price levels? If they are, then this is a strong sign of strength.

Principle Two

The herd will at some time after substantial rises as seen in a bull market become annoyed at missing out on the up-move and will rush in and buy, usually on 'good news'. This includes traders that already have long positions, and want more. Then ask yourself. Is the Smart money selling into this buying? If so, then this is a strong sign of weakness.

Does this mean that the dice are always loaded against you when you enter the market ? Are you destined always to be manipulated?

Well, yes and no !

A professional trader isolates himself from the herd and has trained himself to become a predator rather than a victim. He understands and recognizes principles that drive the markets and refuses to be misleading by good or bad news, tips, advice, brokers’ advice and well meaning friends. When the market is being shaken-out on bad news he is in their buying. When the Herd is buying and the news is good he is looking to sell.You need to get expertise in market timing which is 100% a MUST thing for any successful trader. It's anti-trend, it's contra trend, its pattern recognition and price exhaustion are something you need to understand well before trading actively.

If you are interested in making sense out of the stock market, then you have come to the right place. I would like to take a moment and explain a few things that might help new traders gain a better insight into what trading is all about. Every valid market approach needs three elements to be effective.

#1. The first element is the approach itself, sometimes called the system.

There are thousands of them for sale, some work and others do not. Regardless of the profitability of the approach, they all attempt to guide you, by various means, into selecting a trade. There are numerous books, seminars, software packages and training manuals devoted to teaching people a "valid market approach." Some of these approaches are based on fundamental analysis (price earnings, balance sheets, economic conditions, etc.), while others are based on technical analysis (a manipulation of price, volume and open interest to generate various "studies" such as moving averages, oscillators and trend fold indicators). Most people use fundamental analysis while fewer use technical analysis.

#2. The second element is the money management aspect of the trading system.

This area has come a long way over recent years with a current emphasis on the importance of position sizing. The important point of money management is that it must be tailored to the type of approach you are using, to insure you achieve the anticipated results. You can have a valid approach and apply poor money management and lose money. Or, you can have a poor approach, and apply good money management and still stand a chance to make money. Money management will turn a losing trader into a winning trader, it is very powerful!

#3. The third element is the belief system that is needed to trade the system you are using.

Almost all market approaches neglect this important area. Just think of the racecar driver that really believed he was going to crash. What chances would he have of success? How about if he had the belief that it was okay to drink alcohol the day before his race, or that he didn't need to keep himself in top physical condition. A professional racecar driver, or athlete, or doctor or any professional for that matter, needs to have the proper belief system in place in order to be successful.

Can you imagine a doctor who held the belief that medical school taught him everything he needed to know and that further study was not important. Would you want to go to that doctor? When the right belief system is in place, the subject has a much better chance of success. The same is true for your market approach. Each approach needs its own, unique set of beliefs in order to be successful in that approach.

Again, the three important elements in a trading approach are: The system itself, the money management aspect and the psychological belief system. If you have all three elements in place, and working properly together, what does it give you? It gives you the ability to align the probabilities in your favor.

· This is not a typical technical analysis training session where basic or advance courses are taught and students are asked to practice on the real trading which hardly works well. Conventional method of teaching is actually passive in nature. You learn all the lesson and practice after that. You appear for the exam after mugging up whole book and score a good marks but fail in real life

There is an old saying in business: "Fail to plan and you plan to fail." It may sound glib, but those who are serious about being successful, including traders, should follow these eight words as if they were written in stone. Ask any trader who makes money on a consistent basis and they will tell you, "You have two choices: you can either methodically follow a written plan, or fail."

If you have a written trading or investment plan, congratulations! You are in the minority. While it is still no absolute guarantee of success, you have eliminated one major roadblock. Trading is a business, so you have to treat it as such if you want to succeed. Reading some books, buying a charting program, opening a brokerage account and starting to trade are not a business plan - it is a recipe for disaster. "If you don't follow a written trading plan, you court disaster every time you enter the market".

A plan should be written in stone while you are trading, but subject to re-evaluation once the market has closed. It changes with market conditions and adjusts as the trader's skill level improves. Trader should write his or her own plan, taking into account personal trading styles and goals. There is no way to guarantee that a trade will make money. Professional traders know before they enter a trade that the odds are in their favor or they wouldn't be there. By letting his or her profits ride and cutting losses short, a trader may lose some battles, but he or she will win the war. Most traders and investors do the opposite, which is why they never make money.

Dear Readers,

If you ask me to select one stock which has gone over valued and ready to reverse the trend, one stock which has seen "buying climax" followed by sign of reversal on the next day - then it would be "Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (Live Quote)". This stock is ready to fall and one can make safe money trading in the short side of this stock future.

After a substantial bull move has already taken place in this stock, the stock moves even higher on wide spreads up. Good news, excitement, elation abounding. You observe the volume is Ultra-high (see the excessive volume). This indicates that you may have seen a buying climax (max extent of bullishness).

If at this point there are old trading areas to the left of the chart and at the same price levels [see the old high during Nov'11], this action may not be a true buying climax. At this stage we cannot be totally sure that the Ultra-high volume is mainly professional selling and not absorption of the supply [selling] from locked in traders sitting in the old trading area to the left. We have to wait for confirmation at a later stage. If there are old trading areas to the left of the chart and the market moves sideways for some time and then starts to test, this would then be a strong indication that you had not seen a buying climax but absorption volume and that the professional traders were looking for still higher prices.

What do we mean by saying waiting for confirmation?

Markets do not like very high volume on up bars because something big is happening. Either we have seen a Buying Climax which will mark the end of a rising market. Or professional money is prepared to buy stock from old locked in traders from the last previous high. This is not charity work by the money men but absorption because they are still bullish and are anticipating even higher prices. So, let us wait for Monday and if the stock falls on Monday also then the downtrend or reversal is confirmed.

Baltic Dry Index Slumps To Lowest Since January 2009

The Baltic Dry Index tracks the cost of shipping major raw materials (iron ore, coal, grain, cement, copper, sand and gravel, fertilizer and even plastic granules). Or, more simply, it tracks the precursors of economic output. As such, the Index provides a measurement of the volume of global trade at the earliest possible stage. The Index is down 48.4% in the last month, and 54.4% in the last three months.

Whether this is seasonal output differences or weather impacts, it seems clear that lower steel output in China and a decline in European imports is having its impact on global trade. The index has fallen for 19 days in a row, down almost 50%, its largest drop since the harrowing period of Q4 2008.

European Central Bank (ECB) actions taken in December to counter a potentially devastating liquidity problem in the euro zone are gaining some traction, at least for now. The key step: making $650 billion in new money available to euro zone banks over three years under the Long Term Refinancing Operation (LTRO).

This week, for example, Spain sold one-year debt at a little more than half the rates markets demanded just last month, despite a recent downgrade of its sovereign credit rating. Also, the bailed-out banks have used some of their new-found capital – though not nearly as much as was hoped for — to buy up some European sovereign debt, further easing rate pressures.

The move came just in time. European banks last month were locked in a devastating credit crunch that could have brought the continent’s economy down hard. Banks were refusing to lend to each other, mostly over fears that sovereign debt held on the banks’ books could go bad. That could have caused some bankruptcies, and bank failures could have spread quickly.

The credit situation has improved, if only for the short run, thanks to the LTRO funding. But the big picture remains risky — and in some ways confusing — because of the unusual, circular way in which funds are changing hands between banks and governments. As The Economist noted recently, banks from Spain, Greece and Italy have the deepest capital shortfalls. “Several may have to tap government bail-out funds to raise the capital, creating the circular prospect of governments bailing out their banks that are in turn supposed to bail out the government.”

So if money is simply on a merry-go-round, why have markets responded positively, if only in the short term? “Essentially banks are trying to monetize the debt.” Since the Maastricht Treaty forbids the ECB from simply printing money and buying up debt, “this is an attempt to do the same thing by allowing the banks to borrow and then buy the debt.” In the ongoing European debt crunch saga, all sides seem willing to use more debt to continue gambling on an eventual economic recovery that can reverse the tide. But with Europe now widely believed to be heading into – or already in – recession, many economies are shrinking and so are government revenues, and thus the ability to service all of this debt.

“First of all, the banks are taking on risk. If there is a default on the government bonds they buy, they will likely go bankrupt. This is quite possible and this why so far they have been reluctant to do this in large quantities.” The ECB also is taking a risk – “if the banks go bankrupt, they will be technically insolvent. This will cause a significant political problem.”

The LTRO … may save the day but it also concentrates risk further for the Bundesbank and other central banks in the euro zone system, as well as private banks. The ultimate disaster could be even worse if it all goes wrong. So far, while the LTRO has had the effect of lowering sovereign borrowing costs for some pressed European sovereigns, it has not yet accomplished another key goal – getting banks to lend to each other in a way that increases business and consumer credit. “We see that the key refinancing markets for banks are clogged; the interbank market is basically not functioning”.

The dollar rally fizzled out in the week to 20 January, giving global equities a boost but pushing them to levels where they previously sold off. The US and Indian equity indexes are at reversal points, putting bulls on notice.

Last week we had mentioned that both the US dollar and 10-year US treasuries were poised for a potential breakout and rally, which would have led to a selloff in equities. Both the asset classes are considered safe havens and rallies in them often lead to selloffs in equity.

However, both the dollar and treasuries broke their resistance levels and then sold off, leading to a rally in equities. But the fall in the dollar has pushed equity prices to key resistance levels. This is true of the Indian equity indexes – Sensex and Nifty – as well as the US equity indexes – the Dow and Nasdaq 100.

Also, the fall in the dollar powered a copper rally to a previous selloff level. A selloff in copper is often followed by a selloff in equities. Before we look at the indexes, it is important to mention that a breakout from these levels can take prices higher and result in a further selloff in dollar and treasuries.

Indian markets: A look at the Nifty chart shows that the index has reached the level of a previous selloff in early December 2011. (Click here for Nifty chart). If the Nifty closes above 5, 100, it can rally higher. But till such time that happens, the bias is bearish. Also notice the candlestick the Nifty created last Friday. It is called a hanging man candlestick pattern, which is bearish.

The Sensex, too, has the same structure as the Nifty. It also created a hanging man on Friday. If the index closes about 17,000 it can rally higher. (Click here for Sensex chart). The indexes are at an excellent level to take short positions in anticipation of a selloff. However, if the Nifty rallies about 5, 100 and the Sensex about 17,000, one should get out of the short positions.

Entering at the current level with a stop-loss around the levels mentioned can lead to a small loss, but the profit potential is high. Given the risk to reward ratio, this is a good time to short.

US markets: A fall in US equities generally leads to a drop in the global markets. In the US, two of the four major indexes are at reversal points and they are the Dow and the Nasdaq 100. However, the S&P 500 and the Russell 2000 (small-cap index) have not hit reversal points.

The Dow neared the point of reversal hit in July 2011 (Click here for the Dow chart) and the Nasdaq 100 has already hit the level. (Click here for Nasdaq 100 chart). For the Dow, the reversal point is around 12,800 and a close above that can take the index higher. For the Nasdaq 100, that point is 2,450. The reversal levels are marked on the chart with a white horizontal line and white arrows.

If both these markets rally higher a lot of people will get bullish. But be careful as the S&P 500 is nearing its reversal level near 1,350. The index closed at 1, 315 on Friday. A fall in the S&P 500 can drag the other indexes down.

Copper: Copper hit its reversal level on Thursday and sold off on Friday. (Click here for copper chart) The reversal levels are marked on the chart with a white horizontal line and white arrows. In case copper falls, the equity markets tend to follow. So keep a close eye on copper to get a sense of direction for equities.

Dollar Index: The dollar index sold off but is nearing a level from where it could bounce. A bounce will be additional confirmation for an equity selloff. In case the index falls below 79.50 it can go down further. The index closed at 80.22 on Friday.

Greece debt deal — a wild card: There is talk of a weekend deal between Greece and private sovereign bond holders. Under the deal, bond holders may take a 50 percent haircut (writedown) and extend the maturities. Some people calculate that the 50 percent haircut and maturity extension would erase the net present value of Greek bonds by as much as 75 percent. This is disastrous for the institutions holding the bonds, but the fact that there has been a deal could lead to a market rally.

Today we have seen a volatile session in Nifty moving in the range of just 50 odd points. At one point of time it was looking like an up-thrust but in last 30min someone has played foul and did a mark-up of Nifty closing price. There was a narrow spread (price spread calculated as the difference between high and low of the day, in case of gap-up opening also one need to see the range in which market moved for the day) considering the high volume trade seen today. With such a high volume, small/narrow spread does not sounds comfortable for me.

A narrow spread bar closing on the high with higher volume bar is an indication a mega trend to start soon, in fact it is the indication of wild move in Nifty to come in next few days. You will see that many newspapers and television reports assume that when the market hits new highs on high volume this is buying and a continuation of the up move [the news is 'good' and everybody is bullish]. This is a very dangerous assumption. As we have said before, high volume on its own is not enough. If the market is already in a rally and high volume suddenly appears during an up-day (or bar) and immediately the market starts to move side-ways or even falls next day, then this is a key indicator of a potential end to the rally. If the higher volume shows an increased effort to go up, we would expect the extra effort to result in higher prices. If it does not, then there must have been something wrong. This principle is known as effort versus results.

A high volume up-day into new high ground with the next day level or down is an indication of weakness. If the high volume had shown professional buying, how can the prices not go on up? This action shows that buying has come into the market, but be warned that the buying has most likely come from potential weak holders. being sucked into a rally top! It happens all the time.

By marking the market either up or down late in the trading session on Friday or the day before a holiday commences. Newspaper reporters then have to 'create' a reason for the move. This 'news' will then impair your trading judgement. Professional operators, given any sort of opportunity, will attempt to put you on the wrong footing. A trader is likely to spend the weekend or holiday worrying about his or her position, or even worrying about having no position. By Monday morning a trader is vulnerable to acting impulsively. It is never just coincidence that sudden moves late on a Friday frequently seem to be in the opposite direction to Monday. If this sounds a little paranoid go over your charts carefully and check it out!

Remember that "It takes a strong character to believe what your chart is telling you, and then doing the exact opposite to everybody else."

Greek Debt Deal Falls Short of What’s Needed to Save Euro : Possible outcomes of Greek debt talks!

This week’s main event in Europe has been a standoff between Greece and its private creditors over the terms of a “voluntary” debt-relief deal. Agreement is crucial to avert a Greek default on a 14.4 billion euro payment due March 20, and to keep open the financing spigot from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. Greece must persuade its creditors to take a hefty loss on their investments in order to unlock the aid money it needs to stay afloat, but talks are proving tough, making a messy default in March a real prospect.

The struggling sovereign, also racked by a five-year-old recession, must strike a deal to reduce its towering debt stock by 100 billion euros ($124 billion) to continue receiving bailout money from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund. But private creditors are baulking at current proposals. Bondholders are thought to be a mix of mainly European banks, wincing at the prospect of further writedowns on their loans, and hedge funds who bought the bonds cheaply and are looking to maximise their return.

Sovereign wealth funds, insurers and Greek pension funds also hold Greek debt. Around 206 billion euros of bonds are considered eligible for the deal, meaning debtholders are facing a minimum writedown of 50 per cent providing they all take part. The European Central Bank has significant holdings but is not considered a private creditor and has said it is not involved in the negotiations. The talks are likely to result in a default by some definitions.

Below are some of the possible outcomes of the talks:

GREECE SECURES A VOLUNTARY DEAL

If Greece can reach a deal with creditors on terms of a debt restructuring, private creditors will voluntarily swap their Greek bonds for new ones worth around half their original value. If the deal is to unlock aid funding and remain strictly voluntary, Greece needs to win the support of enough bondholders to reduce its debt stock by the required 100 billion euros. This would still be treated as a type of default by rating agencies, but would avoid a damaging uncontrolled default.

With financial markets sceptical a voluntary deal will be reached, this would be taken as a positive and could prompt investors to buy riskier assets such as stocks at the expense of traditional safe havens like German government bonds. The euro - a bellwether of sentiment towards the currency bloc as a whole - was also likely to rise, with some analysts looking at a return to $US1.30 against the dollar from its current levels around $US1.29.

However, positive sentiment was likely to be limited in scope by the multitude of euro zone problems left unresolved. A voluntary deal that is not binding on all holders of the debt is not likely to trigger payment of the $US3.22 billion of outstanding credit defaults swap (CDS) - insurance contracts designed to protect against a default.

GREECE SQUEEZES HOLD-OUTS

If Greece cannot persuade enough bondholders to sign up to the offered terms on a voluntary basis, it could turn to legal options to force those resisting a deal to swap their bonds. Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos has said he would consider introducing legislation to squeeze hold-outs into taking losses. Such laws are commonly known as collective action clauses (CACs) and rely on the support of a defined portion of bondholders agreeing to a deal, which would then be enforced for all creditors.

Bond markets could take such an outcome as a blueprint for similar action in Portugal and possibly Ireland, sending those countries' bond yields higher. Nevertheless, with a messy default off the table, the euro was expected to see an initial positive reaction. This may, analysts said, give way to longer-term structural concerns about the integrity of the currency bloc. Adding the CAC to bonds would probably not trigger a payment of CDS contracts, but activation of the clause was thought highly likely to lead to a payout.

TALKS END WITH NO AGREEMENT

If the talks break down without any consensus, Greece faces a slide towards a messy default with the repayment of a 14.5 billion euro bond looming on March 20. Greece does not have the money to repay bondholders, leading to a disorderly default - the outcome markets fear the most and one which may force Athens to abandon the common currency.
This outcome would threaten the highly inter-connected global banking system and many analysts say a wave of contagion larger than that seen in the wake of the 2008 Lehman Brothers collapse could be set in motion.

The resulting flight towards low-risk assets would benefit highly liquid government bonds, such as German Bunds and US Treasuries, pushing yields sharply lower. Some forecast 10-year German yields could sink to 1 per cent from their current 1.8 per cent. The euro could extend its recent slide towards $US1.20, levels not see since the Greek crisis first peaked in June 2010. Shares in French banks, heavily exposed to Greece, were seen falling. Holders of CDS contracts would be paid out in the event that Greece failed to repay the bond.

LAST-MINUTE RESCUE

The closer the March 20 deadline, the more likely a potentially disastrous disorderly default becomes. The threat of this doomsday scenario could persuade international lenders to give Greece the money to repay its March bond. The International Monetary Fund has requested internal approval to start talks with Greece on "exceptional access" to the Fund. However, a last-minute rescue would reward speculative investors who bought Greek debt at deep discounts with a full payout - an outcome analysts believe would face strong political resistance.

Under this scenario, financial markets, cautious about the prospect of an unprecedented euro zone sovereign default, would trade in a volatile fashion with sentiment hinging on any signs that a deal was going to be reached. Safe-haven assets such as German Bunds were likely to be in high demand but susceptible to sharp sell-offs if a rescue was suddenly seen to be in the offing.

Dear Readers,

After a successful test (shake-out) in the market on monday, a gap-up opening on tuesday was most likely [Refer my article yesterday - LINK]. Yesterday, I did mentioned that it is a matter of 50-100pts in Nifty and we are almost done as far as upside is concerned. What next for the market is to go on profit booking (sideways move with -ve bias) followed by fall of 200-250pts in Nifty (most likely by expiry). What we are seeing today is just a technical breakout which started in December 2011, yet the fundamental backdrop seems to have improved very little. This is a rally which will attract most of the investors who were sitting on the sideline waiting for market to bottom. INVESTORS, DO NOT GET TRAPPED IN THIS BEAR MARKET RALLY, WE ARE YET TO SEE MARKET BOTTOM.

Why bull run takes long time...

Bull moves run longer than bear moves because traders like to take profits. This creates a resistance to upmoves. However, you cannot have a bear market develop from a bull market until the stock bought on the lows has been sold (distributed). Resistance in a bull move represents selling. The professional does not like to have to keep buying into resistance, even if he is bullish. He also wants to take the path of least resistance. To create the path of least resistance he may have to gap-up, shake-out, test, and so on, or he may do nothing at that moment, allowing the market to just drift.

Why market falls sharply...

Bear markets run faster than bull markets because a bear market has no support from the major players. Most traders do not like losses and refuse to sell, hoping for a recovery. They may not sell until forced out on the lows. Refusing to sell and accepting small losses, the trader becomes locked-in and then becomes a weak holder, waiting to be shaken out on the lows.

What is the purpose behind gap-up opening?

You cannot help notice how major moves from one price level to another usually happen quickly. This rapid movement from one price level to another is not by chance – it is designed for you to lose money. You can be suddenly locked-into a poor trading position, or locked out of a potentially good trade by one or two days (or bars) of rapid price movement: The Index or stock usually then rests and starts to go sideways. If you have been locked-into a poor trade, you may regain hope, and so will not cover a potentially dangerous position. The next sudden move against you does exactly the same thing, so the process continues.

Conversely, if you are not in the market and have been hesitating or waiting to trade, sudden upmoves will catch you unawares; you are then reluctant to buy into a market where, yesterday, you could have bought cheaper. Eventually a price is reached where you cannot stand the increases in prices any more and you buy, usually at the top!

My Final Conclusion : I am, of course, always open to the market proving me wrong at some point -- there's no bull side or bear side, only the right side. But at the moment, I see far more evidence for a bear market top than for an ongoing bull market. I may be proved wrong for 1 week in a month just because I do not control this market and this market always goes to such extent to create max pain to max number of guys. But being a student of the market, I will be right for the rest of 3 weeks of the month.

Today, we have seen a classic example of "test" in the market which is a sign of strength of tomorrow. Tests are done in order to check the supply (selling pressure). Let see the reason why professionals have to 'shake traders out of their holdings’.

On every small rally, some traders, who still hold the stock you feel bullish about, will start to sell. If they are weak holders, they are glad to see at least some of their money back. This annoying selling creates resistance to the professional, who has accumulated a line of stock, and wants to be bullish. The cost of having to buy stock at higher levels to keep prices rising is very bad business. This is the reason a stock or an Index is unlikely to go up until most of these weak holders have been 'shaken-out’. Bull markets usually rise slowly, but rise persistently, unlike bear markets that fall rapidly. This slower rise seen in bull markets is caused in part by locked-in traders selling on any small rally (resistance to the up-move).

Market Outlook : We are running out of steam for this rally, most of the traders as well as analyst are convinced that this rally will continue, we may see max 50-100 odd points on the upside in Nifty and 200-250pts on the downside is expected in Nifty. Well, there is no doubt that Indian markets are trading way below US & European peer but if you look at DOW/S&P etc you will find a top formation or call it a distribution zone which will be followed by decline especially if the earning session starting from tuesday fail to satisfy traders expectations. S&P downgrade of European countries should not be taken lightly.

If you refer the above chart, you will notice that US & European market are doing much better than our Asian market. Global issues which were impacting world equities has originated from US & Europe but Aisan market are the one which are facing selling pressure, Why? On the other hand, Philippine Stock Market is trading at its life time high. Only the time will tell, if we are on the way to recovery or these upmoves are false one and we are yet to make the bottom.

Given the fact that credit rating downgrades in Europe will keep that region’s difficulties in view and the fall in euro against the dollar would pressure the rupee as well, there could be uncertainties on Indian bourses due to global pressures. It would be interesting to see how things unfold on Monday, when trading resumes following rating agency Standard and Poor’s decision to downgrade the ratings of nine euro zone countries. Since this was not a surprise and there were sufficient warnings and indications about the same, I think the markets would not react strongly to it, though there may be some initial reaction to it.

Monday would be an important day for Indian markets as monthly Wholesale Price Index numbers would be out. The inflation number would be keenly watched, as this would offer the first clue about the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) likely action in its forthcoming policy review meeting on 24 January. If inflation slows, then it would pave the way for RBI to cut rates, which everyone is hoping for. Since the undertone of RBI is expected to remain dovish, the markets may not react strongly even to sticky inflation numbers. On the earnings side, the schedule is hectic with some big names due to report their earnings. Markets will closely watch these numbers for cues on the performance of India’s corporate sector.

We think the markets would consolidate and could see some profit-taking.

If you ask me to tell you one single most important thing in successful trading, it is - "MARKET TIMING". Market timing is the most important expertise you must master to become a successful trader. This is where the majority of traders fall by the wayside. Buy too early and you are squeezed out on any temporary falls. Sell short too early and you are squeezed out on any up moves, even if, after a few days or so, you are proved correct in your analysis. Understanding what the volume is telling you; recognising testing, stopping volume, up-thrusts, or no demand, will get your timing surprisingly accurate.

When you do decide to short the market do so only on an up-day/bar if possible [see no demand, up-thrusts, ultra-high volume up bar with next bar level or down], and only if there are signs of weakness in background such as lower tops, down trend, high volume on up day/bar with no corresponding up move following, all signs of weakness. Let us understand the bar by bar movement for the last week.

Monday - Nifty did a testing (shake-out) in order to check the supply (selling pressure) and after gap-down opening it recovered and closed flat which says that there is not much selling pressure on the downside. This is a sign of strength (SOS) and an indication of upside move on the next bar.

Tuesday - We have seen gap-up opening and higher price. This is usual move just after a successful testing day which was seen on monday. Nifty moved up by 100 odd points.

Wednesday - We have seen flat day with increasing volume, this is a sign of weakness (SOW) because just after a gap-up day if the next day is flat and the volume is high, it shows some kind of distribution or selling pressure on the bar. Weakness on this bar was likely to get confirmed only if the next day is down.

Thursday - A strange kind of move we have seen on thursday, first half of the day was an up-thrust which is a sign of weakness and the second half of the day was shake-out which is the sign of strength. Nifty was showing a confused move, usually this is seen when there is tough fight going on between bulls and bear. We have to see the next day to confirm the trend.

Friday - Unfortunately, friday's move in Nifty was yet another complex move which is a mix of Shake-out + Up-thrust + Shake-out. Well, at this point of time, it is very difficult to predict the next move. Nifty has not given any clear direction on friday.

The stock market is ruthless and unforgiving if you dare to disobey its logic. Understand its logic and it suddenly becomes your greatest friend. What a good trader thinks is the most important to him is to take the minimum of losses and to get out of a poor trading position fast! Focus the mind on minimising the losses and the good trades will look after themselves. If you allow unacceptable losses, you are hurt, the pain turns to fear, stopping you from trading.

It’s now official – Credit Rating of France cut to AA+ from AAA by S&P, outlook Negative

For the past one week, I have seen the best brains trying their best to convince the ‘sheepish investors’ that a rally has indeed started on the Indian bourses and they feed investors with news about all that’s nice happening around whilst suppressing all the horrible things happening in the domestic and international arena. Crooks always have a way of their own – when the USA was downgraded many crooks said – don’t worry guys, the US is a strong country and a downgrade is not such a bad news so long as Helicopter Ben is alive and lo the global stock markets came crashing down like a house of cards whilst gold started rising higher and higher.

On 13 January 2012, ratings agency Standard & Poor's has downgraded the government debt of France, Austria, Italy and Spain by one notch, but maintained Germany's at the coveted 'AAA' level. The cuts, which eliminated France and Austria's triple-A status, deal a heavy blow to the currency union's ability to fight off a worsening debt crisis. Italy was lowered to BBB+ from A. Spain slipped to A from AA-.

The downgrade of France, the world's fifth-largest economy, marks the second high-profile downgrade of a top tier triple-A nation by S&P in less than six months, after it stripped the U.S. of the ranking and sparked a wave of controversy in August. France continues to hold triple-A ratings from Fitch Ratings and Moody's Investors

France, a country whose nuclear power industry has been called "a success story" and put the nation "ahead of the world" in terms of providing cheap, CO2-free energy has at last been stripped of its coveted AAA rating. Once a country loses its triple-A, it is an uphill struggle to get it back. S&P stripped Canada of its triple-A foreign currency rating in 1992 and the country didn't win it back until 2002.

France's finance minister announced the downgrade, which could affect the European Union's bailout fund. France and Germany have been the Eurozone's pillars and their good credit has supported the rescues of countries like Ireland and Greece.

François Baroin, France's finance minister, sought to minimize the effect the downgrade may have on the country and the Eurozone. In an interview with television station France 2, he said ratings "don't dictate French politics." "Of course we would have preferred to keep our Triple A credit rating," Baroin said.

But lets face it – no person, entity, corporate or country has the right to rate themselves because that would be ridiculous. If you do a good job people will recognize and acknowledge the truth sooner or later. Similarly, if a bank misuses funds, it’s NPA’s will soar, credit ratings will slide, deposits will gradually be withdrawn and sooner or later the bank may go bust. Thus, no individual or no country can go scot free. Sooner or later the truth will be revealed and the truth shall prevail.

Every student would love to retain his/her ‘A’ rating but its not the student but the teacher who assesses and decides how well the student has fared. Similarly every corporate and country have to show consistent good performance on various fronts if they wish to retain their superior rating else they will have no option but to pay superior rates to obtain funds because of sub-par and inferior ratings.

France was along with Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands among the six eurozone nations with a AAA rating. Sources were unable to say what S&P decided to do with the two others, Austria and Finland. S&P warned last month that the credit ratings of 15 of the eurozone's 17 member states were at risk of a downgrade due to the ongoing debt crisis.

France's ratings downgrade weakens the ability of the euro zone's bailout fund to help the bloc at a moment when Greece is needy for its support. The fund, called the European Financial Stability Facility, has no capital of its own. Instead, it relies on borrowing against the credit of stronger countries to help the weak. That is a problem when the formerly strong move into the realm of the weak. Greece will need €14.5 billion in March to repay a bond that's coming due, and billions more in the following months.

And the bad news won’t stop with France’s downgrading. Let’s not forget that Europe’s big banks will be forced to find €108bn ($150bn) of fresh capital over the next six to nine months under a deal to strengthen the banking system agreed by European Union finance ministers. And as Paul Krugman says : “I think, this is a band-aid — and one that’s going to be applied gradually, over six to nine months! — when the patient is at risk of dying in a few weeks from damage to his internal organs.”

The downgrades come as crucial talks on cutting Greece's massive debt pile appeared close to collapse Friday. Result The DJIA, FTSE100, DAX, CAC40 all were in the red on Friday 13 January 2012.

One notch, some may say is not alarming but the negative outlook means a future downgrade is likely. The worst has yet to come but come it shall, sooner than later. Expect more skeletons to fall off the Eurozone cupboard and expect global stock markets around the globe to come crashing down as banks and countries in the Eurozone start going bust one after the other. Forewarned is forearmed. From here on, just remember this – any rally however powerful shall be short lived.

Bearish sentiment fell to the lowest level in roughly a year. Bullish sentiment rose to the highest level since early February 11, 2011. It clearly shows that we are in for descent slide in the market since the number of people bullish is much higher than the number of people bearish on the market.

During Nov 10th 2011 week we have given a call of 450pts fall in Nifty mainly based on this sentiment indicator and our target were achieved in just 7-10 days. This time things are worst, 49% market participants are bullish and just 17% are bearish which indicates the bearish outlook for the market.

There may be some time leg between market peak and bullish sentiment peak hence one should not trade with high risk because you may need to wait for sometime probably 7-10 days or more before market will actually start falling. Always react with the market rather than anticipate what it will do. No one can time the market with accuracy so even if you are right on your trade you may not be right on the timing so trade keeping this in mind.

Today we will talk about US market & the movement of Dow Jones Index. Why it is important for us is because DJIA is going to fall 5-6% in next 7 days which is going to impact Indian equity market also. With earnings season kicking into high gear in US, dozens of companies from across the market spectrum are slated to step up to the plate in the coming week. A 23% decline in JPMorgan Chase’s fourth-quarter earnings spooked the market today and sent shareholders scurrying out of bank stocks that had been enjoying a fast start to 2012. Markets were also seeing some resistance on reports that S&P may downgrade a number of eurozone sovereign credit ratings, including that of France, at some point Friday after threatening as much in December.

Just to brief you on the market, today was one of the very interesting day for a Nifty trader. "Buy the rumor, sell the news is something that happens in most markets, particularly financial" and today we have seen that, inspite of good IIP numbers, market got sold off. Remember that markets move because of the effects of professional accumulation or distribution. If a market is not supported by professional activity, it will not go very far. It is true that the news will often act as a catalyst for a move (often short-lived), but always keep in mind that it is the underlying activity of ‘smart money’ that provides the effort and the result for any sustained price movement.

Traders spend too much time predicting the future and not enough time just managing what the future offers. Breakouts, as well as breakdowns, occur in zones of conflict which was Nifty 4700 - 4800. Both sides of the market are very passionate at these turning points, but no one knows how much force will be needed to carry price into a sustainable trend. So any position you take near these key levels carries considerable risk, no matter how perfect your patterns and setups look.

Price can respond in different ways to breakouts....

It can carry through successfully to higher levels;
It can generate whipsaws that force losses on both sides of the market; and
It can trap buyers in a false move and start a trend in the opposite direction.

Successful breakouts occur in three phases....

They begin when price breaks through resistance on increased volume. We'll call this the action phase. Price then expands a few points or ticks and reverses as soon as buying interest fades. This starts the reaction phase. The market sells off and spawns the first pullback, where fresh buyers see a chance to get positioned near the breakout price. If all systems are go, a second rally kicks into gear and carries price above the initial breakout high. This marks the resolution phase, which confirms the initial rally through resistance.

The three phases of a successful breakout are dependent upon certain volume characteristics.....

Demand must exceed supply during the initial breakout. Volume should dry up when it pulls back in the reaction phase. Then a healthy supply of new buyers needs to jump in to ensure a successful resolution phase.

Whipsaws and false breakouts result when these supply-demand dynamics fall out of balance. Whipsaws are defined by choppy price swings through common support or resistance levels. Natural tug and pull generates most whipsaws, but hidden hands also manipulate price by hitting common stop levels in order to generate volume.

In a healthy breakout scenario, the reaction phase shakes out weak hands and forces price back into resistance. But there must be willing buyers throughout the choppy movement. A breakout can't succeed unless these bulls step in repeatedly to support the market. Reversals occur when price action traps one side of the market. Many traders wait to enter positions at key breakout levels. These folks are at the mercy of the market once they execute their trades. In other words, their profits depend on others seeing the same breakout and jumping in behind them.

False breakouts occur when this second crowd fails to appear. An overbought, one-sided market can drop quickly below a breakout level. This throws all the traders who bought the breakout into losing positions. Without the support of fresh buyers, a stock can fall quickly under its own weight.

Dear Readers,

We had a descent rally of 100+ points in Nifty on tuesday after successful "tests" or "shake-out" sign seen on monday. What is more imp is not the rally of 100pts in Nifty but the break-out in Nifty which was seen yesterday above Nifty 4800 levels. Was this breakout a valid or it's a false breakout? This question was answered today when a narrow spread up-bar on increased volume was seen. Prices were kept low to encourage buying, which accounts for the narrow spread. Traders are completely unaware of the implications of volume activity and are probably buying on repeated ‘good news’.

TODAY WE HAVE SEEN, EFFORT WITH NO RESULT

Frequently, you will see effort with no result. Today we have seen high volume but no movement in the market. For instance, you may observe a bullish rally in progress (Gap-up day seen on Tuesday) with sudden high volume appearing – news at this time will almost certainly be ‘good’. However, the next day has only gone up on a narrow spread, closing in the middle or even the lows. Today's move in Nifty has given us a clear indication of the next market swing.

When reading the market, try to see things in context. If you base your analysis on an effort versus results basis, you will be taking a very sensible and logical approach that detaches you from outside influences, such as ‘news’ items, which are often unwittingly inaccurate with regards to the true reasons for a move. Remember, markets move because of the effects of professional accumulation or distribution. If a market is not supported by professional activity, it will not go very far. It is true that the news will often act as a catalyst for a move (often short-lived), but always keep in mind that it is the underlying activity of ‘smart money’ that provides the effort and the result for any sustained price movement.

LET US UNDERSTAND THE BREAK-OUT MOVE…

There are only three ways that price can respond to a breakout. First, it can carry through successfully to higher levels. Second, it can generate whipsaws that force losses on both sides of the market. Third, it can trap buyers in a failure event and start a trend in the opposite direction. A successful breakout occurs in three phases. It starts when price breaks above resistance. This is the action phase. Price expands upward and then reverses as soon as buying power fades. This starts the reaction phase. The instrument drops and spawns a pullback, where sidelined buyers get a second-chance opportunity to enter the trade. If all the stars line up, a second rally wave then triggers, pushing price above the initial breakout high. This marks the resolution phase.

False breakouts occur when the action-reaction-resolution cycle fails to attract enough buyers. Many traders wait to enter positions at key breakout levels. Once these folks enter their positions, they're at the mercy of the market. In other words, their profits depend on others seeing the breakout and jumping in behind them. Major reversals occur when this second crowd fails to appear.

A breakout with insufficient buying power can drop quickly below a new support level and trigger a cascading selloff which will further take the market down. This negative action also marks the resolution phase, but in the opposite direction. The dynamics are easy to understand. The failure traps traders who bought the breakout, throwing them into losing positions. Downside momentum then builds, triggering short-sale signals on a whole new batch of trading screens.

Me – Choosing stocks are just like choosing grooms, once you are done selecting and composing your portfolio, it’s time for you to give them time to grow just like you give time when you get married to an unknown person.

He – That’s strange relationship!

Me – Yes, it’s strange somewhat but that’s what define the stocks and the portfolio.

He – How?

Me – See, In life when a person go for an arrange marriage they just make decision in those 15 minutes which are spend meeting each other. Yes or No are evaluated in those 900 seconds. After you get married, over the period of time you discover each other, whether the positive points or the flaws which makes relationship stronger.

He – True!

Me – In the same way, after we buy a stock we tend to discover the company over the period of time. Company’s quarterly results, bonuses, AGMs, contracts help you to believe in the relationship that started when you buy a share and becomes a shareholder.

Me – As no marriages succeed in one single night, same way no small companies transform into big companies in a matter of time. It becomes slowly and steadily over a period of time. At times there may be strong disagreement with the decision of the company and at times their might be slowdown in the economy which adversely affecting the growth of the company. These are just the testing period which husband and his wife share during the course of time of marriage.

Me – Another thing is that there might be times that the stock you have selected may not performed according to the expectation but that does not mean your selection was wrong. We are humans and we tend to make mistakes in picking the companies.

Me – You need to continuously monitor your portfolio in good times and also in bad times. In good times when you are making profit never remain behind in booking profit and when you loses never be afraid of booking loses as well. We are here to earn while learning from our mistakes over the period of time.

He – Why to book loses?

Me – If you feel that the stock you invested is not good and not performing up to expectation despite giving ample time exit that stock, because it’s better to cut one branch rather than burning whole tree.

In a bear market it is a resumption of the cyclical downtrend triggered by deteriorating fundamentals is a major profit-taking event. It still remains to be seen whether or not stocks have rolled over into another cyclical bear market. We are entering the timing band for one of those daily cycle corrections. It's not unusual to see this begin as a profit-taking event in DOW/NASDAQ on the employment report, as we enter earnings season.

As long as earnings season meets expectations then that is all this should be, just a profit-taking event. However, if earnings season disappoints then this could intensify significantly. If in addition we start to see stress in the European debt market escalate it would magnify the rally in the dollar increasing the downward pressure as stocks begin the move down into that cycle low. Let's face it the problems in Europe aren't going away. The cancer in the debt markets is going to continue to chew its way up the sovereign food chain until it finally reaches the US bond market.

The fact that the dollar has consolidated for several weeks above the double top breakout is a strong sign that another powerful leg up is beginning. Once dollar start appreciation, it will hit rupees which will drag the Indian equities further down. Even more concerning for the bullish case is the fact that the next daily cycle should roll over into a much larger degree intermediate decline. That would almost certainly power another leg higher in the dollar and depending on how severe the stress has become in Europe we could see the October lows tested, and even broken if this is a new cyclical bear market.

The kind of selling pressure that is generated at daily cycle lows and especially during an intermediate degree decline effects every asset class to some extent. Gold will be no exception. This is why I have been warning people to wait for the daily cycle low to form in stocks before jumping heavily into precious metal positions.

Right now patience is the name of the game until the stock market has formed a daily cycle low which is due sometime in the middle of January. Cash or a modest position with limited exposure is advisable at this point of time.
